In News:

  • To honour Chandrayan-3’s landmark achievement, Hon’ble Prime Minister announced August 23 as “National Space Day”
  • The first National Space Day will be celebrated across India in 2024.
  • This year’s theme, “Touching Lives while Touching the Moon: India’s Space Saga,” highlights the significant impact of space exploration on society and technology.
  • Indian Space Sector was valued at $9.6 Bn in 2020, contributes 2%-3% of the global space economy. The size of the sector is expected to reach $13 Bn by 2025, and by 2030 India further aims to capture a larger share of close to 10% of the global economy.
Global share of Space ecplorations
  • Up to 100% FDI is possible in satellite – establishment and operation under the government route, subject to sectoral guidelines of Department of Space/ISRO
  • Currently more than 400 industrial firms engaged in Indian space sector.
  • India has established several industrial clusters e.g Salem aerospace cluster, Tamil Nadu and Belagavi Aerospace cluster, Devanahalli cluster and others.

  • India established Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) and New Space India Limited (NSIL) for promotion of private sector in Indian space economy.

IN-SPACe

  • To facilitate participation from the private sector, the Department of Space (DoS) established the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe).
  • Though funded by the DoS, IN-SPACe is an autonomous, single-window, nodal agency for all space sector activities of NGEs (Non-Governmental Entities)
  • It serves as an authorisation and clearance agency for space launches, provides infrastructure support for launch pads, monitors and facilitates the procurement and trade of satellites, enables the use of DoS facilities, and more.

New Space India Limited (NSIL)

  • NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), serving as the commercial arm of ISRO under DoS, helps NGEs commercialise their space technologies and platforms.
  • It facilitates manufacturing, leasing, procuring, and trading space components, technologies, and other assets for global markets.
  • It also facilitates space services offered by ISRO and now private companies and consortiums to international and global agencies.

Recent Programmes launched

1. Space on Wheels Programme

  • Between: ISRO & Vijnana Bharati (VIBHA)
  • The primary goal of this initiative is to disseminate information about ISRO’s activities and India’s space missions to school students across all states of India.

2. Bharathiya Antariksh Hackathon

  • Organized by ISRO, the national-level hackathon will present students with various problem statements, encouraging them to develop creative solutions.
  • Exceptional students from the finale will be offered internships at ISRO centres.
